The idle question is a bit of a puzzle - the backfiring - likely the engine and exhaust are full of years of accumulated crud - ride the sucker with high test gas- get it out on the highway and roll a couple of tanks of gas. Run it at steady speeds - for a few hours -
When you roll off the throttle - make sure it comes all the way off - no partial throttle stuff - whjen you slow down - cut the throttle all the way back.
Once the crud is burned out - it will be quieter and smoother running with much less backfiring and the idle problem may disappear on its own.
Keep the rubber side down
